Demarest History
Ten moments in Demarest’s history, from an early sandstone farmhouse and a railroad flag stop to the 1872 stone depot, the duck pond and the National Register. A narrated film of 1 minute 37 seconds, with English captions, a full transcript and sources.
A railroad village on the Tenakill
Demarest stands on Lenape homeland, where the Tenakill Brook runs through the Northern Valley. Its recorded history runs from an early stone farmhouse and a railroad flag stop to a stone depot, a duck pond, a new borough and the National Register. Each date below gives the line as it is spoken in the film, followed by a short note drawn from the sources listed at the end of this page.
The 1723 date for the stone farmhouse is a local tradition recorded in its National Register survey. Where the records disagree on a day, as for the 1859 railroad, the 1903 borough and the last passenger train in 1966, the film gives only the month or the year. The scenes are an AI historical dramatization: generated imagery that suggests each period, not archival photographs or footage. The dates and notes below come from the published records listed under Sources.

1859 · A Flag Stop
1859. The Northern Railroad opens, and trains begin stopping at a small country flag stop.
The county histories record that the Northern Railroad of New Jersey was completed on October 1, 1859; another source gives an earlier day, so the film gives the year only. The depot’s National Register nomination records that Demarest began as a flag stop on the line. Clayton and Nelson, 1882 · Van Valen, 1900 · National Register nomination, Demarest Railroad Depot, NRIS 04000671
1871 · A Name on the Map

1872 · The Stone Depot
1872. A Romanesque Revival depot of Palisades freestone rises by the tracks, designed by J. Cleveland Cady.
The depot’s National Register nomination, citing the Bergen County Democrat of June 21, 1872, dates the station to 1872 and credits the design to J. Cleveland Cady. It is Romanesque Revival, built of freestone quarried on the Palisades slope. A later date of 1874 appears in some accounts; the film follows the nomination and the New Jersey Historic Trust. The 1882 History of Bergen and Passaic Counties describes an artificial lake fronting the depot, fed from the Tenakill (page 213). The film uses the year of that description; the sources read do not give the year the pond was made. Clayton and Nelson, 1882 · National Register nomination, Hardenburgh Avenue Bridge, NRIS 01000237
1903 · A Borough Is Born
1903. In April, Demarest becomes a borough, formed from Harrington and Palisades townships.
Snyder records the formation of the Borough of Demarest on April 8, 1903, from parts of Harrington and Palisades townships. A later account gives April 13, so the film names the month only. Snyder, 1969
1911 · The Bridge at the Pond
1911. The Hardenburgh Avenue Bridge over the Tenakill Brook is widened, beside the pond.
The Hardenburgh Avenue Bridge, a brick arch over the Tenakill Brook built about 1875, was widened in 1911. A spillway just upstream forms the duck pond.
